I tried to use similar pictures in my magazine and on my poster so that it was a recognisable image/ actress for my audience. I wanted them to be able to view the poster and magazine to gain an idea of the film and of the actress, then to see it elsewhere, advertised through different mediums and know instantly the film they wanted to see or vice versa. I think this works in attracting my target audience too, as there are many ways the film can be advertised to them depending on what they prefer, watching TV, reading magazines or being out and seeing posters. In the audience feedback that I have conducted, I realised that the poster and the trailer were most effective in appealing to my target audience. Although the picture that I used of my actress on my magazine…is my actress, because it is a still from my trailer it isn’t of as good quality as it could have been. Therefore it may not be as identifiable as the other two. Although I think that with the poster and magazine I have been able to combine the name of the actress with the product which of course helps advertise if it is an actress that my target audience likes. I think that all three of the media products perform different functions: – Poster serves the purpose of initially advertising the film, and creating suspense for the audience as to what the film is about seeing as though there isn’t much to go on from the poster. This was deliberate. I wanted the poster to give a feel for the film but not to fully give away the plot, as this was the job of the next product….. -The Trailer. The teaser trailer is to get the audience excited and to give them a short overview of the plot, and what they will be in store for if they were to go and view it. It introduces the actress again, and the combination of editing, title and music creates tension, suspense and excitement. – The magazine cover is an interview with the lead actress of the film, as it comes closer to release day. This is the end of the promotions as such, it gives the reader/audience a written overview of the plot, plus maybe other gossip and information that will lead them to go and view the film. If they like the actress, the plot, and the interview…then it is set to be a success!

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

The blog was our main source to showcase our production and to keep track of all of our research and planning. Admittedly I have found it difficult to keep up with the updating and logging everything that I have done, sometimes forgetting to put up things that I have just thought of or have viewed that have linked to my work. When we first started using the blog I found it difficult to get used to, but more towards the end of the project I have been blogging a lot more. In order to keep on track with my trailer and ancillary texts I have been trying to blog things that may be useful, such as forms and conventions of trailers, magazine covers and film posters to help to conform or challenge these in my own work. I have also logged trailer analysis to again, research into the forms and conventions and to see how I could incorporate my research into my own blog.

I generated responses to my work through surveys that I made, and via facebook as I sent links to my friends at university and who don’t live near by to give me their honest opinion. I set up my polls on freeonlinesurvey.com and got over 30 responses which helped me to form my audience feedback. I made the surveys in to some yes/no answers and others, where I enquired a more in depth analysis I inserted a text box so that I could get a more varied response from my audience. I also used facebook to send links of my trailer to friends and family that I couldn’t show in person. This meant that I was getting feedback from people of different ages and genders to get different perspectives and views.

I began to get to know the cameras and equipment that we had available to us at school right at the beginning of the year. Obviously we didn’t use video cameras last year it was just still cameras, therefore it was useful to me to take a few lessons to get to know the technologies available. So, at the beginning of the year I took the cameras out with some friends in my class and we played around in front of the camera and changed the settings to learn how it worked. I then had to work out how to transfer footage on to the computer and what to do with it from there, with help from teachers and friends I managed to put together a decent set of skills to help develop my products effectively. As my trailer progressed I started to experiment more with my camera work and editing as I began to feel more confident with what I was capable of. For example, I followed my actress down the alley from behind and later sped it up to look like she was running. I needed to master skills such as, effectively using a tripod so that the camera didn’t move, and then how to move the tripod to different positions without disrupting the angle.

I used photography to create my poster as I was filming my trailer. I was filming the last shot for my trailer and I saw a picture in my head that I wanted to take, so I literally flipped the camera from video to still and took my photograph. I took a few, but it ended up being that I used the first photograph that I had taken. I opened the photograph on Photoshop and began to experiment with some editing. (See pictures on PowerPoint and blog). I had quite a lot of experience with Photoshop through my art a level and from my AS media studies. Therefore, there wasn’t as much to learn as there was with Adobe Premiere Elements as I had seen it all before. I played around mainly with saturation and contrast to create different effects and to see which lighting worked better with the mood I was trying to create.

I created a PowerPoint to display my analysis of my trailer, shot by shot, and also to answer some of my evaluation questions. I was filmed giving my presentation, so that I could add to what I had written and let my other ideas come across through natural speech. I also did a question and answer session so that if I had missed anything, or if anyone was confused by anything then I could give them the answer on the spot and have it recorded as evidence.

Film posters are a vital source of advertisments for film production companies as they attract the audience and are a major source of visual communication to portray what audience the film is aimed at.

In my own poster i used a photograph

  • A large title which attracts the eye
  •  bold colours which stand out from the background
  • intriguing picture which would attract viewers to
    the film
  •  persuasive language which might persuade the viewers to go
    and see the film
  •  using the main character’s name for promotion.
